Dean Cycon

Major at Williams: Political Science

My post-Williams peripatetic journey continues: two years traveling the globe turning cow manure into methane gas in India and Iran, being kicked out of the latter for threatening the life of a minister (total mistranslation!) and of course teaching English at Cook School in Japan while studying Judo and Kendo and meditating in old temples.

A ten-year brush with the law as an attorney working with indigenous peoples and environmental groups, a totally weird stint as an underwater treasure hunter/attorney, fellowship at Woods Hole Oceanographic and Fulbright Scholar in New Zealand working on Maori treaties and tribal empowerment.

Thirty years as a coffee social entrepreneur with lots of international awards (and a Williams Bicentennial Medal!) and love from farmers worldwide, then turning Dean’s Beans into a worker-owned coop two years ago to focus on my longstanding passions – research and writing.

On-stage life continues, with community theater, "special extra" role in Pirates of the Caribbean, host of two PBS specials, tons of short, interesting YouTube videos (search for "dean cycon." Here is a short video that explains what Dean's Beans is all about:
